A Finite Element Approach to the Static, Linear-Elastic Behaviour of Axisymmetrically Loaded Corrugated Bellows Expansion Joints
This project arose from an on-going partnership between Vickers Shipbuilding & Engineering Limited (VSEL) and Liverpool Polytechnic which has already resulted in a study of bellows design. A double bellows was supplied by VSEL and this was instrumented with strain gauges. The measured results were compared with theoretical values and those obtained from finite element analysis.

The Flixborough Disaster of 1974, which killed 28 and seriously injured 36 people was caused by the failure of a corrugated bellows expansion joint.
