Abstract

This article explains Simulation Governance for the non-specialist Expert Witness. It uses structural/mechanical engineering as a vehicle where known theoretical solutions are available as Strength of Materials solutions but where unknown theoretical solutions can be approximated using the finite element method. The essential elements of Simulation Governance, i.e., Verification (software and solution), Validation and Uncertainty Quantification are presented and discussed. Examples of cases where published information and data is misleading and even, in some instances incorrect, are provided. The article ends with Practical Conclusions for the Expert Witness to consider when facing results from numerical simulations such as FEA or CFD.
